What is MDF?

Medium-density fibreboard usually known as the abbreviation MDF is an engineered wood product. MDF is made by breaking down hardwood or soft residuals into wood fibres. The panels are usually made in a defibrator by applying high temperature and pressure with some wax and resin binder. Because MDF is made up of separated fibres, it is generally denser than your average plywood. MDF can be used as your building material like your plywood.

Advantages of MDF

MDF has a lot of advantages, but the main reason is due to the material having no knots or rings, making it more uniform than natural woods during cutting and in service. Some other advantages of MDF are:

  • Consistent in strength and size
  • Shapes well
  • Stable dimensions
  • Material is flexible

How we use MDF

MDF Panels can be used for a range of areas around the house. You can have different types of MDF such as Moisture Resistance or Standard MDF. Moisture Resistant MDF is usually used for your kitchen and bathroom doors, as these are places that have a high velocity of moisture. The qualities of moisture resistance MDF will be better than your standard MDF however, standard MDF can still be used for all other rooms within the house.

All our doors and panels are manufactured in United Kingdom, with state-of-the-art machines guaranteeing you accurate measurements for your material. MDF panels can come in different levels of thickness:

  • 18-25mm is used for most types of panels (doors, drawers, lezene, and thin countertops)
  • 30-40mm is used for more thicker panels (wardrobes, cupboards, decorative panels, and thicker countertops)

MDF Panels can be painted in a wide range of shades and colours based of RAL and NCS standards. Safe Wood Kitchens offers two types of finishes which are painted and veneered. Paint finishes can either be in matte or glossy which is then covered by lacquered paint to give the panel a solid, durable finish. Veneered finishes are paper thin cuts of wood which get glued over a strong surface such as, an MDF panel. Veneered is good if you like the design and texture of wood but still want a finish of matte, glossy or lacquered paint over the top.
